If you're driving from A to B and your navigation device says: "We have found a faster route to B that avoids 16-minute congestion at the round-about? Would you like to take it?"

How likely are you to say yes?

Unless you have no plans of reaching B in time, you're highly likely to say yes. You've got work to do and chores to finish! Similarly, you can save your users time by letting them hop the WooCommerce cart and take the shortest route to the checkout.

In this post, I am going to show you how to skip the cart and send users straight to the checkout page.

The goal is to make the purchase process shorter, reduce the drop-offs at various steps in the flow and increase overall conversions.

With these distinct goals in mind, let's dive right in...

The Fastest Route To Checkout: How To Skip Cart & Send Users Directly To Checkout

The Conventional Funnel Flow (What Happens Currently)

First up, let's take a step back and think about the current flow. Let's assume that you're directing traffic from a paid or a free source to this product page:

Here's what currently happens:

  • The interested shopper adds the item to the cart
  • Clicks on the cart icon on the top right
  • Goes to the cart page and clicks on 'Proceed To Checkout'
skip cart
  • Goes to the checkout page and clicks 'Place Order'

There are quite a few steps involved in the purchase process. Unfortunately, no matter how much you optimize the flow, a percentage of visitors will drop off at each step of this funnel flow.

Look at the funnel visualization for a typical eCommerce website:

More the number of steps in the process, greater the friction and hence lower the conversions.

The number of people who will finally make it to the checkout page will always be far lower than the number that started the journey on the product page.

This right here is the problem.

Introducing Cart Hopper: The Shortest Route To A Conversion-Focused Checkout

Cart Hopper is an add-on for Aero Checkout. It allows you to let users hop the cart for select products or all products and go straight to the checkout page.

We built this bonus add-on because a lot of our users asked us for a way to skip the cart and direct shoppers to a conversion-focused checkout page built by Aero.

Take a look at the checkout page exclusively built to sell the shaving razor {Aero Checkout Template: Classic}

Checkout Page built using Aero. Template: Classic

It's a customized WooCommerce checkout page built to sell the razor. Notice a few important things about this product-specific checkout page:

  1. The image + copy at the top lets the user know that they're on the right page (good for lowering the checkout abandonment rate)
  2. The quantity adjuster lets users adjust the quantity so they don't really need the cart page
  3. The section on the right adds to the credibility of the product (good for checkout conversions)
  4. The reviews and testimonials are specific to the razor
  5. The order bump at the bottom is a 'post-shave balm' which is a perfect complement to the main purchase

So this checkout page is undoubtedly more conversion-friendly compared to the standard checkout page.

Now let's look at how to skip the cart and direct visitors from the razor's product page to this checkout page.

The best part? You don't need any code snippet to set this up.

How To Skip The Cart When They're Buying A Single Item

If you're directing traffic to a specific product page and you wish to skip the cart for the item, take this step-by-step approach:

Step #1: Create a new rule 'Cart Item(s) Match - All Of These' and enter the product name

skip cart settings
Cart Hopper Settings

You have two options here - any of these and all of these.

Choose 'any of these' when you want to skip the cart when they're buying more than one product.

Choose 'all of these' when you want to skip the cart if the said item is the only one they're buying.

Step #2: Enable Skip cart for selected items

This is just a double check. Tick this checkbox to allow Cart Hopper to skip the cart completely when the conditions match.

Step #3: Change the 'Add to Cart' button text

Change the text to let users know that they will be taken straight to the checkout and don't have to go to the cart page.

Here are some options for your button text:

  • Checkout Now
  • Buy Now
  • Get It Now
  • Buy The <Product Name>

Step #4: Select the checkout template

When you click on the checkout template, a drop down will load with all the Aero checkout pages that you have created. You can pick the template that you've specially created for the product.

That's it. Now when the user will click on the 'buy it now' button on the product page of the razor, they will be directed straight to its checkout page.

How To Skip The Cart When They're Buying Multiple Items

When they're buying more than one item, the cart serves two important functionalities. On the conventional cart page, the users can:

  • Delete item(s) and recovered deleted item(s)
  • Adjust the quantity of the item(s) they're buying

So when you completely eliminate the cart step, you'll realize that the users will not be able to do these things.

But not if you append a mini cart on the checkout page hence making the cart redundant.

Take a look at the mini cart on the checkout page:

One can delete, recover deleted item(s) and also adjust quantity for each of the items they're buying.

In order to configure this, select the rule as 'Any Of These'. And write the name of all the items for which you would like the cart to be skipped.

Next check the box that says - enable skip cart for selected cart items. Rename the "add to cart" button and finally select the global checkout template.

When you set this up, here's what'll happen:

  • The user will be able to cart all the items in your store except those on the list (see the image above)
  • When they land on the product page of one of the items on list, for example, the Philips Aqua Touch - they'll see the 'Buy Now >>' button
  • On clicking on the button they'll be led straight to the checkout page with all the items they've already added in their cart, including the Philips Aqua Touch

On this global checkout page, they'll have the ability to delete, recover deleted items and also alter the quantity of the items.

That's a Wrap

There you go!

So that was an easy way (without writing any code snippets) to skip the cart and direct people straight to the checkout page.

You can use this technique specifically for products that you're going to be advertising and maximize your ROI.
